Welcome to Biosphere
Based out of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Biosphere Sustainable Living was started in 2024 by Josiah Roche(left). After studying international politics in college and entering into the nonprofit sphere of Tulsa, Josiah witnessed first-hand one of the most pressing issues that faces both the citizens of Tulsa and the majority of communities around the world. That issue is food independence.
Right out of college, Josiah began working in garden-based afterschool programs through the Tulsa-based nonprofit, Global Gardens. After that, he started a community garden in Tulsa’s Hope Valley neighborhood(epichope.us/community-garden) and began the initial development of Tulsa’s first “agrihood” through the North Tulsa organization, Crossover Community Impact. Through this work, it became obvious that real change in restoring a community’s ability to source its own food would take more than just education, it would take citizens themselves putting these agricultural practices into effect not only on large farmland but on their very own neighborhood property. The question arose: “Instead of building a community garden next to a neighborhood, what if the neighborhood itself was the garden?” From that question, Biosphere was formed.
Through reclaimation of dormant yard space and the introduction of food and resource-reclaiming systems, Biosphere serves the people of Tulsa by educating on, planning, and implementing sustainable food and resource systems–no matter the size of the property. Contrary to popular belief, homesteading practices and food independence are not reserved for the 10-acre farm but can be put into effect in the most urban of environments. At Biosphere Sustainable Living, we can show you how.
